WashU Blanks Carroll in Home Opener

From Washington University Athletics

The No. 10 Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team blanked Carroll, 5-0, in the 2023 home opener on Friday afternoon at Francis Olympic Field. The Bears are now 3-0 on the season and have not let up a goal in three games.

The Bears broke through in the 43rd minute. Kerrigan Ferland had a chance following a rebounded shot, but the goalie and several defenders held things off. Following a scuffle, Grace Ehlert corralled the ball and drilled a shot low to put WashU up 1-0.

Following halftime, WashU made it a 2-0 game in the 49th minute. The Bears earned a corner kick, taken by Anna Viscovich. Viscovich placed the ball right in front of the goal and Allyn Hackett ultimately got a foot on the ball through the chaos to score.

In the 58th minute, Viscovich put another point on the board for the Bears, firing a low shot from the top of the box into the right corner, making it a 3-0 game.

In a similar play, Kaci Karl scored for the Bears in the 71st minute, shooting from the top of the box high into the center of the next for a 4-0 lead.

Junior Meryl McKenna scored her team-leading third goal of the year in the 76th minute, taking a pass from Ella Koleno and firing it into the back of the net for a 5-0 Bears match.

Offensively, the Bears tallied 20 total shots with 15 on goal and generated six corner kicks.

On the defensive end, the Bears limited Carroll to just two shots all game with one on goal – both in the first half of the game. Carroll did not earn a corner kick.

Senior Sidney Conner collected her first blank sheet of the year, making one save for the win.
