CWRU 3,200-Meter Relay Earns All-UAA Honors on Day 1 of UAA Championship

The Case Western Reserve University 4x800-meter relay led the Spartan women's track and field team on the first day of the 2023 University Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Stagg Field and Haydon Track on the campus of the University of Chicago in Chicago.

The relay of senior runner Danielle Sarno, sophomore runner Marquis Globokar, junior runner Grace Jackson, and first-year runner Lauren Iagnemma placed third in 9:30.60 to earn All-UAA honors. It is the first career All-UAA honors for all four runners and the highest finish in the event for CWRU since the Spartans placed second at the 2010 UAA Outdoor Championships. The time ranks second in program history.

Case Western Reserve scored in three field events on the first day of the meet. In the hammer throw, three Spartans earned top eight finishes, led by a fifth-place finish from junior thrower Ailean Duffie, who recorded a mark of 44.94 meters. Senior thrower Tori Cohen placed sixth with a heave of 44.64 meters, and sophomore sprinter/thrower Rachel Ginn earned a point with the eighth-best mark of 43.18 meters. Junior thrower Adrienne Wachtman placed sixth in the shot put with a mark of 11.40 meters, and senior vaulter Shelby Cooper tied for eighth in the pole vault by clearing 2.95 meters.

Four CWRU runners advanced to the finals with top-eight finishes in preliminary heats. Senior hurdler Mia Kilroy reached the finals in the 400-meter hurdles with the sixth-fastest prelims time, crossing the line at 1:08.12. Both Sarno and first-year hurdler/jumper Grace Misiunas had the seventh-fastest times in their events. Sarno qualified for the finals of the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.13, and Misiunas reached the finals in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.51 seconds. Rounding out the qualifiers was senior runner Melissa Phung-Rojas, who advanced to the finals of the 800-meter run with a prelims time of 2:16.66.

Overall, CWRU is fifth in the conference standings with 17.5 points. With seven out of 21 events scored, Chicago leads all teams with 101.5 points, with WashU in second place with 72.5 points.
