CWRU Swimmer Ethan Chuang Earns Academic All-America Second Team Honors

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Ethan Chuang, a junior swimmer on the Case Western Reserve University men's swimming and diving team, was named to the College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) Academic All-America Second Team, as announced by the organization on Tuesday.

Chuang becomes the seventh CWRU men's swimmer to be named a CSC Academic All-American and the first since 2018. He joins former Spartans Drew Hamilton (At Large First Team, 2018), Andrew Henning (At Large Second Team, 2017), John Erickson (At Large First Team, 2006, 2007), Pat Rodjom (At Large Third Team, 2006), Jay Gindin (At Large First Team, 1992, 1993), and Guy Genin (At Large Third Team, 1990) as Academic All-Americans.

It is the first career Academic All-America selection for Chuang.

Since the program's inception, a total of 101 Case Western Reserve student-athletes have been named Academic All-Americans, compiling 140 selections. Chuang is the eighth Spartan to earn Academic All-America honors for the 2022-23 academic year, joining Elizabeth White, Anika Washburn, and Helina VanBibber of the women's soccer team, Alex Lippiatt and Matt Vatne of the men's soccer team, Sara Rogers of the volleyball team, and Maria Pritchett of the women's swimming and diving team. The eight selections are one shy of tying the institution record of nine from the 2019-20 academic year.

Chuang, who earned his first career Academic All-District honor this season, helped set two school records during the 2022-23 season as a member of the 200 Medley Relay (1:30.15) and 400 Medley Relay (3:18.48). Both relay times ranked in the top 30 in Division III heading into the national meet. At the 2023 University Athletic Association Championships, he helped both relays place sixth in their events. Last season, Chuang qualified for the NCAA Championships in his first collegiate campaign, placing 18th in the 200-yard breaststroke, 22nd in the 100 Breast, and 47th in the 200-yard individual medley. Earlier in the year, he set a still-standing school record in the 100 Breast (54.74 seconds). A CSCAA Scholar All-American and two-time UAA All-Academic selection, Chuang has a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA as a finance and economics double major.

The CSC Academic All-America program separately recognizes swimming and diving honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA. The Division III CSC Academic All-America programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structures to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2022-23 Divisions III Academic All-America programs.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.50 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at their current institution, and be selected to an Academic All-District team.
