UChicago Swimming & Diving Collects Five CSC Academic All-American Awards

Five members of the University of Chicago swimming & diving programs were selected to the 2022-23 Academic All-America Teams, as selected by the College Sports Communicators (CSC).

Arthur Kiselnikov earned a spot on the Academic All-America First Team. The senior concluded his collegiate career with seven more All-American performances at the 2023 NCAA Championships. He was second in the 400 freestyle relay, third in the 400 medley relay, third in the 800 freestyle relay, fourth in the 200 freestyle relay, fifth in the 200 medley relay, seventh in the 200 freestyle and 16th in the 100 freestyle. The senior upped his All-American total to 19 over his three years of competition. Kiselnikov was also a 2022 NCAA national champion in the 400 medley relay. The University Athletic Association (UAA) picked him as the league's Men's Co-Swimmer of the Year and Rookie of the Year in 2020.

Filippa Kolokotsa received First Team Academic All-America accolades in her senior campaign. She claimed All-American status at the 2023 NCAA Championships following her fifth-place showing as part of the 400 freestyle relay. Kolokotsa snagged four All-American awards at the 2022 national meet and four more CSCAA All-American awards in 2020. Within the conference, she was a five All-UAA honoree.

Jesse Ssengonzi gained First Team Academic All-America status as well after picking up four All-American honors at the 2023 NCAA Championships. He set a new NCAA meet record in the 100 butterfly prelims at 46.47 seconds and took national runner-up in the finals. The UChicago junior also placed third in the 200 butterfly, third in the 400 medley relay and fifth in the 200 medley relay. Ssengonzi previously won the 2022 NCAA national titles in the 100 butterfly and the 400 medley relay. The eight-time All-American earned recognition as the 2023 UAA Men's Swimmer of the Year and the 2022 UAA Sophomore Rookie of the Year.

Garrett Clasen garnered a Third Team selection on the Academic All-America list. He closed out the season by winning his second-straight NCAA national championship in the men's 200 IM. The Maroon junior has won three national titles in the last two years, including the 400 medley relay in 2022. Clasen earned six All-American awards at the 2023 NCAA Division III Championships – 200 IM (1st), 100 breaststroke (2nd), 400 freestyle relay (2nd), 400 medley relay (3rd), 800 freestyle relay (3rd) and 100 butterfly (9th). The 11-time All-American was previously picked as the 2022 UAA Men's Swimmer of the Year.

Karen Zhao collected Third Team Academic All-America status. She capped her sophomore season with five All-American honors between the 800 freestyle relay (3rd), 200 freestyle (4th), 400 freestyle relay (5th), 400 medley relay (8th) and 100 freestyle (11th). Zhao increased her career All-American total to nine to go with her six All-UAA recognitions.

Nominees for Academic All-America must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at their current institution.
