UChicago Swimming & Diving Reel in 14 All-American Honors at Day Two of NCAA Championships

The University of Chicago swimming & diving teams racked up 14 All-American awards at day two of the 2023 NCAA Division III Championships on Thursday.

Jesse Ssengonzi shattered his own school record and NCAA meet record in the men's 100-yard butterfly prelims. The UChicago junior's time of 46.47 was only 0.01 seconds off the all-time NCAA Division III record. In the evening finals, Ssengonzi claimed NCAA runner-up in 46.68. Teammates Garrett Clasen and Jared Zhang reached the consolation final as both earned Second Team All-America in ninth place and 13th place, respectively.

The men's 200-yard freestyle relay blew past the previous school record as well. The quartet of Zhang, Jason Starbuck, Jonathan Tang and Arthur Kiselnikov put up a time of 1:19.80. That mark secured fourth place and First Team All-America honors.

UChicago's 400-yard medley relays earned All-American podium finishes for the men and the women. The men's group of John Paul Phillips, Clasen, Ssengonzi and Kiselnikov grabbed third place in 3:12.76. The women's relay of Ioanna Georgopoulou, Alicia Soosai, Emily Xu and Karen Zhao snagged eighth in 3:46.92.

The 200-yard freestyle featured six total Maroons in action. Zhao reached the women's championship final and placed fourth overall in 1:50.34 to gain First Team All-American accolades. Kiselnikov grabbed First Team All-America status with his seventh place showing (1:39.05), while Kyle Garcia was a Second Team All-American in 10th place (1:37.96).

Marcell Milo-Sidlo stormed his way to a school record in the men's 400-yard IM prelims with a time of 3:54.80. He ended up as a First Team All-American with a seventh-place finish in the evening session.

The Maroons garnered Second Team All-America honors in three other events. Logan Sherwin (437.00 points) and Andrew Chen (434.55 points) took 11th and 13th, respectively, in the men's one-meter dive. Emily Xu grabbed 10th in the women's 100-yard butterfly (55.59). The women's 200-yard freestyle relay (Xu, Olivo, Chanell Kann, Grace Schwieters) placed 10th in 1:33.89.
