TJ Carleo Wins UAA title in 800-Meter Run, Judges Finish Sixth

The Brandeis University indoor track and field teams competed at the 2023 University Athletic Association outdoor championships at the University of Chicago this weekend. The Judges had 14 total scoring performances on the second day of action. The men and women both placed sixth, with 36.50 points and 29 points respectively.

SCORING PERFORMERS

  • The top Brandeis men's performance at the UAA invitational came from first-year TJ Carleo (Newburyport, Mass. / Newburyport). Following his fourth-place finish in yesterday's prelims, he climbed the ranks and won the 800-meter dash final. He set a personal record in the process, with a time of 1:51.98. Carleo now has the top three performances for Brandeis this season, and this holds the second-fastest time in the UAA this season.
  • Carleo is now ranked 20th in Division III in the event, putting him right on the cusp of NCAA Championship qualification. He is Brandeis's first 800-meter champion outdoors since Chris Brown '12 in 2012.
  • The javelin throw saw two impressive performances. First-year Adam Rieden (Littleton, Mass. / Littleton) finished fourth with a distance of 47.58 meters, while senior Jonathan Hau (Taipei, Taiwan / Taipei American School) placed seventh, setting a personal record of 45.22 meters. Reiden finished two feet shy of All-UAA honors.
  • Following yesterday's personal record in the hammer throw, senior Artemis Reynolds (Cherry Valley, Mass. / Leicester) had another strong outing in the discus throw. They placed seventh with a distance of 38.77 meters. Hau placed 11th, setting a personal record distance of 37.58 meters, but it was not enough to score.
  • Senior Dion Morris-Evans (Canal Fulton, Ohio / Northwest) finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.88 seconds.
  • In the 400-meter hurdles finals, junior Ori Slotky (Closter, N.J. / Northern Valley Regional) placed eighth with a time of 57.66 seconds.
  • The 4x100 relay team of sophomore Jordan Colon (Devens, Mass. / Bromfield School), sophomore Danny Krigman (Chelmsford, Mass. / Chelmsford), first-year Leo Schiappa (Wareham, Mass. / Old Rochester Regional), and first-year Matthew Yue (Vancouver, B.C. / Woodside Priory School) slotted in at seventh with a time of 44.10 seconds.
  • The 4x400 relay team of Carleo, junior Samuel Kim (La Jolla, Calif. / Phillips Exeter (N.H.), Morris-Evans, and Slotky also placed seventh, with a time of 3:30.53.
