CWRU Completes Weekend Sweep of NYU, Extends Win Streak to Nine

From Case Western Reserve University

The Case Western Reserve University softball team extended its winning streak to nine games by winning the series finale 5-3 over New York University on Sunday morning at the Krenzler Dome in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Spartans, who swept the three-game series, improved to 11-6 overall and 3-0 in University Athletic Association play. The Violets fell to 5-11 and 0-3 in conference play. Due to inclement weather, the Saturday and Sunday games in the series were moved inside to Cleveland State University's Krenzler Dome.

After the first two Spartans of the game reached base, junior infielder Amanda Riely put CWRU on the board with a two-run single up the middle. She plated sophomore pitcher/infielder KaiLi Gross and sophomore outfielder Stevie Rieger, who both had multi-hit days.

Gross extended the Case Western Reserve lead to three with a run-scoring groundout in the second inning. Rieger followed with a run-scoring double to put the Spartans up 4-0 in the early innings. The Violets responded with three runs in the next inning with a run-scoring single and a two-run double.

CWRU loaded the bases in the fourth inning with no outs, and sophomore catcher Jordon Manworren added a key insurance run with an infield single. The NYU starter struck out the next two Spartans to prevent any more runs from scoring.

First-year pitcher Kylie Hosey, who entered the game in the fourth inning, retired the side in order in the fifth and sixth innings to preserve the lead. The Violets threatened in the last inning, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate with two outs. However, Hosey retired the next batter with a fly out to center field to end the game.

Hosey (7-3) picked up the win in relief, throwing four scoreless innings while allowing just two hits. She picked up her first hit of the season at the plate, a ground rule double to center field. Gross started the game in the circle, her first start of the season, allowing three runs in three innings with three strikeouts.

At the plate, Gross went two-for-three with two runs scored and a run batted in. She also stole a base, increasing her team-leading season total to 14. Rieger had the first three-hit game of her career, going three-for-four with a run scored and a run batted in. She added two steals and has 13 on the season.
