The Brandeis University softball team got three RBI from junior Haley Nash in support of rookie Ragani Kannan, who tossed a four-hit shutout as the Judges defeated visiting New York University in the first of a four-game University Athletic Association series.

TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis: 15-9, 7-6 UAA.
  • NYU: 17-12, 6-7 UAA.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Judges put two runners on in the first after a single by junior DP Alex Cohen (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) and a double by Nash, but they were unable to cash in.
  • Brandeis broke through with a four-run third inning. The Judges loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. After NYU starter Marina Egbert got the first out on a strikeout, she hit Nash with a pitch to plate the first run of the game.
  • First-year 1B Maddie Manes (San Clemente, Calif / San Juan Hills) singled through the right side to bring home two more runs, and sophomore catcher Tristan Boyer (Chesapeake, Va. / Grassfield) plated the fourth run of the frame as the Violets threw out the third out of the inning on the basepaths.
  • The Judges added their final two runs in the fifth inning when Cohen was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and Nash followed by lifting a home run to left-center field.
  • It was Nash's team-leading fourth home run of the season and the 16th of her career, tying her for seventh on the Judges' career list.
  • Kannan took over from there, giving up a couple of singles but not allowing a runner past second base.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Nash was the game's top offensive performer, going 2 -2 with three RBI, two runs scored, a home run and a double.
  • Manes was 2-3 with two RBI and a double, while sophomore 2B Anna Kolb (Alexandria, Va. / Thomas A. Edison) also had a two-bagger.
  • Kannan scattered four hits in her seven innings of work for her fourth shutout of the season to improve to 10-4 on the season.
  • She faced four batters over the minimum, striking out four and not walking or hitting any batters. 63 of her 80 pitches went for strikes.
  • The only NYU hitter to reach second base came in the sixth inning, when Margaux Lesser singled to shortstop with one out and moved to second when the throw to first got away.
  • Egbert took the loss to fall to 7-6. She went four innings, allowing nine hits and six earned runs. She struck out five, walked one and hit two batters.
  • NYU reliever Jessie Werthman tossed two innings with a walk to finish the game.
