WashU Opens Emory Series With Extra-Innings Win

The Washington University in St. Louis softball team defeated Emory 3-2 in nine innings to open the UAA series. The Bears are now 14-15 on the season and 6-7 in conference play.
 
Emory put a run on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Page Nellis drew a lead-off walk and moved up on an Ashley Chu grounder. Ella Hoyle drew a walk and a Natalie Swift single loaded the bases. A sac fly from Tyler Miller scored Nellis for the 1-0 lead.
 
The Bears tied things up in the top of the third inning. Payton Irwin led off with a single to second and Olivia Craycraft singled and advanced to second on an error. Katie Gould double to center, scoring Irwin.
 
Emory scored again in the bottom of the sixth inning. Chu led off with a single to short and moved up to second on a Swift ground out to second. Miller doubled to center, driving in Chu to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
 
WashU responded quickly, tying the game in the top of the seventh inning. Tami Wong reached on a fielding error and advanced to second. Irwin singled to right field, scoring Emily Talkow, who was in to run for Wong.
 
The Bears scored what would be the eventual game-winning run in the top of the ninth inning. Wong led off with a single to right and advanced to second on a Kayla Nommensen ground out. Craycraft sent a single to right field, scoring Wong for the go-ahead run.
 
Irwin went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored while Craycraft finished 2-for-4 with one RBI. Gould finished 2-for-5 with one RBI.
 
Holly Stoner picked up her fifth win of the year in the circle, pitching a complete game with two earned runs, four hits and six strikeouts.
