NYU Duo Earns Postseason Honors

NYU Duo Earns Postseason Honors

From NYU Athletics

A pair of New York University women's basketball players have earned All-East Region honors from D3hoops.com.

Junior guard Janean Cuffee (New York, NY/The Lawrenceville School), who led the University Athletic Association (UAA) in scoring, and senior guard Annie Barrett (Cambridge, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols), who set NYU's all-time assists records and led NCAA Division III in the category, were both recognized.

Cuffee, who averaged 20.4 points per game and led the Violets with 45 steals, earned First Team honors. She produced five games with at least 30 points, including a season-high 37 against St. John Fisher College on December 7. Cuffee ended the season with back-to-back 24-point outings as the Violets advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.

"Janean worked tremendously hard this year and it is well-deserved to be recognized as one of the top players in the East region," said Head Coach Meg Barber. "She consistently produced in a big manner for our program all season and we are all proud that she represents us with her relentless work ethic."

Cuffee has accumulated 1,075 points in her three-year NYU career, 14th on the team's all-time scoring list.

Barrett, who led the nation in assists with 7.5 per game, was selected Second Team All-East. Her 202 assists during the season smashed the old NYU standard of 148 and lifted her four-year total to 435, another program record. She recorded five games of at least 10 assists during the season and finished eighth in NCAA Division III in assist/turnover ratio (2.4).

"For a person not concerned with individual accolades, I am so proud to see Annie honored in this way after leading the country in assists this season," added Barber. "Her recognition shows what our entire program has known all season, that Annie is a leader and a force on the floor and one of the best to do it at the point guard position."

Barrett placed second on the Violets with 5.8 rebounds per game and 44 steals while also contributing 5.4 points per contest.

This is the 19th year D3hoops.com has named an All-Region Team, and this year's All-America Team will be the 23rd selected. All-Region honorees are also eligible to be selected to the All-America Team.

The Violets finished the 2019-20 season with an overall 21-6 record, including a 10-4 second-place mark in the UAA. The squad earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and defeated Emmanuel College before falling to host Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME.
