From NYU Athletics
Jenny Walker and Belle Pellecchia combined for 41 points in leading the the New York University women's basketball team to a 66-55 University Athletic Association (UAA) victory over Emory University on Sunday, February 6 in Brooklyn, New York.
The Violets (17-1, 8-1), currently ranked #9 in the nation by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and #10 by D3hoops.com, picked up their third-straight win and pushed their lead over the Eagles (12-6, 6-3) to two games for first place in the UAA standings.
The first quarter was close throughout as Emory pulled within one, 15-14, on a Claire Brock jumper with 55 seconds on the clock. Natalie Bruns then scored four points in the final 38 seconds of the frame to give NYU a 19-14 edge after one.
NYU outscored the visitors 17-12 in the second, holding Emory to 31.3 percent shooting in the quarter as the Violets held a double-digit halftime advantage (36-26).
Emory cut its deficit to five points early in the third, but the Violets went back up by 10 after a pair of Jordan Janowski free throws with 1:09 remaining. Brock had a perfect trip to the line of her own 34 seconds later as the Violets led by just seven (47-40) entering the final period.
Brock connected on another jump shot with just over two minutes left in regulation to bring the Eagles with six, 56-50, but NYU responded with six unanswered points to put the game away. The hosts led 62-50 with 27 seconds to play and hit just enough free throws down the stretch to preserve the double-digit win.
