Record-Setting Performances Highlight Day One of NCAA Championship for Emory Women's Swimming & Diving

From Emory University Athletics

Two national titles headlined the opening day of the 2023 NCAA Championships for the Emory University women's swimming & diving, with the Eagles making history in both events.

Following a strong close to the evening, the Eagles pulled into a tie with Kenyon College for second place with 90 points and will enter day two trailing Denison University by a 17-point margin.

After not seeing an Eagle qualify for the finals in either the 500 Freestyle or 200 IM, the Emory women made up significant ground with highlight reel performances across the final three events of the night.

Sophomore Ariana Khan became the first diving national champion for the Eagles for either the men's or women's teams since 1993 when Katie Hughes won the women's 1-meter event. With Khan's finals score of 478.40, she cemented herself into the Emory record books, becoming the first-ever women's 3-meter national champion in program history.

Following Khan's record-breaking performance on the diving boards, more history was made in the swimming lanes as the 200 Medley Relay team of Megan Jungers, Anna Glowniak, Taylor Leone and Caroline Maki broke the Division III record with a winning time of 1:39.55, narrowly going under the previous national standard of 1:39.59 set by Kenyon at last year's championships. Leone and Maki were a force on the backend, posting splits of 23.69 and 22.23 on the final two legs to overcome Kenyon for the title.

Leone and Maki also reached the podium earlier on the evening as the sprint duo submitted top-five finishes in the 50 Freestyle. Leone placed fourth in the finals at 22.89 with Maki touching right after in fifth at 22.98. Junior Tess Klugherz rounded out the Eagles' point scorers on the first day of competition, earning All-America Honorable Mention status in the 3-Meter, placing 16th at 387.75.
