Kaley McIntyre of NYU Wins Second National Championship in Two Days

From NYU Athletics

For the second night in a row at the NCAA Division III Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina, Kaley McIntyre became a National Champion. She captured the 200 freestyle on Thursday after winning the 50 freestyle on Wednesday.

Her win represents the eighth individual national title in team history for New York University's eighth-ranked women's swimming & diving team.

Jumping out and leading the 200 freestyle from the start on Thursday evening, McIntyre blitzed the final in 1:47.44 to cut over a second off her own program record, which was set at the University Athletic Association Championships. When she hit the wall, the Violets both on the pool deck and in the stands erupted with the force of the freshman's historic, First Team All-American race.

"It was a tremendous swim," Head Coach Trevor Miele said. "She controlled the race from the beginning. I can't say I'm surprised. She's got ice water running through her veins.  Nothing worries her. She just gets in and gets the job done. I'm so proud of her."

Joining McIntyre as First Team All-Americans were the 200 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay teams. In the freestyle relay, McIntyre, Isabel OldhamJessica Flynn, and Jolie Le Fauve finished eighth in 1:33.91.

"It's just so exciting to be here and get to race with this group of people one last time," senior Flynn said. "This team means the world to me. I've put so much energy into this and I've gotten so much out of it. I don't know what my college experience would have been like without this team. I just wouldn't have it any other way."

Flynn led off the 400 medley relay while Anna Li swam the breaststroke leg, Isabella Brosvik the butterfly, and McIntyre the freestyle anchor. The team finished sixth in 3:43.92 to deliver the Violets' third podium finish.

In the 400 individual medley, Candice Saxod earned Second Team All-American with her 11th-place finish in a season-best 4:25.33.

"Candice had a very impressive swim," Miele said. "Last year at this meet, she was a little all over the place. But, this year she's been so consistent. It goes to show the maturity she's gained with experience from last year and how it's translated into a well-paced swim. She's definitely got a lot more in the tank for next year."

With two National Champion titles, five total First Team, and three Second Team All-American performances across the first two days of Nationals, the Violets are currently in sixth place overall. Over the next two days of competition, they will try to best their highest Nationals finish of fifth place in 2019.

Third-ranked Denison University is in the lead, while #2 Emory University is in second.
