Maroon Women’s Tennis Tops Amherst 5-3 in NCAA Quarterfinals

The University of Chicago women's tennis team battled its way to a 5-3 victory over Amherst College in the NCAA Division III Championship quarterfinals on Monday night.

The No. 1-ranked Maroons (21-1 record) reached the NCAA semifinals for the fifth time in program history. The No. 9-ranked Mammoths concluded the year with a 13-9 record.

UChicago got off on the right foot by capturing two of the third doubles bouts. The tandems of Sylwia Mikos/Shianna Guo at No. 1 and Nicole Geller/Lauren Park at No. 3 both won by matching 8-3 scores.

In singles action, the Maroons received wins at the top two spots to put themselves on the brink of a team victory. Mikos picked up a 6-2, 6-4 triumph at No. 1, while Guo also recorded a straight-sets win at No. 2 by scores of 6-2, 7-5.

Middlebury pulled to within 4-3 with two matches remaining. However, it was Geller who capped off the evening with a 7-6, 7-5 clincher at No. 4.
