UChicago Women’s Tennis Bests Middlebury 5-1 in Semifinals, Moves on to NCAA Title Match

From University of Chicago Athletics

One decade ago, the University of Chicago women's tennis team reached a new peak by advancing to the NCAA Division III Championship final for the first time in program history. Fast forward to the present and the Maroons replicated the feat on Tuesday afternoon by defeating Middlebury College 5-1 in the NCAA semifinals.

The No. 1-ranked Maroons (22-1 record) won their 22nd-straight match and will take on No. 4-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Wednesday's NCAA national title bout.

UChicago held the early advantage 2-1 after doubles against No. 5-ranked Middlebury (18-6 record). First-year doubles partners Sylwia Mikos and Shianna Guo won 8-5 at the No. 1 position, while senior Lauren Park and first-year Nicole Geller were also victorious by the same score at No. 3.

In singles play, the Maroons took the first set in four of the six contests to maintain momentum. Mikos rolled past her opponent at No. 1 by scores of 6-1, 6-2. First-year Miranda Yuan claimed the No. 5 position with a 6-1, 6-4 victory. Junior Claudia Ng prevailed at the No. 3 spot with winning scores of 6-3, 6-3.

UChicago has reached the NCAA semifinals five times, including a stretch of four years in-a-row from 2009-12. The 2012 squad finished national runner-up to Williams College.
