WashU Defeats Rochester, Advances to Fifth-Place Match at UAA Championship

The No. 19 Washington University in St. Louis women's tennis team defeated Rochester 5-0 in the UAA Tournament. The Bears will now face Brandeis on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. ET in the fifth place match.

The Bears swept doubles to take a 3-0 lead early on.

Divya Sharma and Katherine Johnston defeated Rola Abouzeina and Jaclyn Dron 8-0 at second singles to start things of on the right foot. Maggie Yang and Aasha Ardila followed that up with an 8-1 win at third singles over Stephanie Kim and Olivia Waysack before Karen Gao and Ainsley Heidbreder defeated Cami Ruiz Vega and Josephine Libby 8-6 at first singles.

Anke Patel was the first to claim a victory in singles, defeating Waysack 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles. Katherine Johnston clinched the match for the Bears with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Abouzeina at third singles.

Gao lost the first set 6-0 to Libby at first singles and was winning the second set 4-2 when the match was called. Sophia Huynh defeated Ruiz Vega 6-0 in the first set of second singles and was trailing 1-5 in the second set.

Heidbreder and Stephanie Kim were tied 6-6 at four singles when the match concluded while Hannah Johnston beat Shreya Mandalapu 6-0 at the first set of fifth singles and was winning 5-0 in the second set.
