Spartans Advance to NCAA Second Round with 5-0 Win

The 13th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team earned its second ever postseason win on Friday afternoon at the William Washburn Tennis Courts on the campus of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, defeating Transylvania University 5-0 in the First Round of the 2023 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship.

CWRU started the match with a win at third doubles as sophomore Anna Kan and senior Nina Hoog defeated Christina Duvall and Maddy Williams 8-1 to earn the first point. Sophomores Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey won at first doubles, 8-2, over Grace Gardner and Katherine Taylor. At second doubles, sophomore Radha Patel and first-year Katalina Wang completed the sweep, besting Jessica Burton and Maria Hayes 8-4.

Junior Pallavi Goculdas put the Spartans one point away from clinching the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Williams at sixth singles. Wang sent Case Western Reserve to the second round with a 6-0, 6-0 win at fourth singles over Duvall.

When the match was called, Kassaie led Taylor 6-0, 3-1 at first singles, McCloskey led Gardner 6-1, 2-1 at second singles, Patel led Burton 5-3 at third singles, and first-year Elsa Syed led Hayes 6-1, 3-0 at fifth singles.
