Host Tartans Open UAA Round Robin #2 with Upset Win Over No. 6 Emory, Top Rochester in Three Sets

The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team hosted the second round robin of University Athletic Association (UAA) play Sunday. The Tartans first match of the day was against the sixth-ranked Eagles of Emory University, as the Cardinal and Gray won 3-2. The Tartans then topped the University of Rochester 3-0 to move their recorded 12-3 overall and 3-2 in UAA play.

  • Junior Lauren Reichard and classmate Avani Seshiah led the Tartans with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
  • At the net, the Tartans totaled two block solos and 26 block assists with junior Jane Dean leading the way with a season-high seven assists and one solo.
  • Freshman Isabella Sierra had the other block solo and tied a season-high with five block assists.
  • Senior Stella Yan recorded a career-high five block assists. Yan also handed out 34 assists.
  • Five Tartans tabbed double-digit digs with junior Mindi Lai leading the charge with a career-high 22. Reichard had 18, freshman Elizabeth Schlemmer had 14, sophomore Abby Chen tabbed 12 and Yan ended with 10.

Inside The Box Score Against Rochester

  • Schlemmer led with six kills as Seshiah and freshman Katherine Jackson each had four.
  • Senior Arianna Rosario recorded a career-high six block assists while Seshiah had three, also a career-best.
  • Yan dished out 21 assists in the win.
  • Chen led with 13 digs as Schlemmer ended with 12.

  • "The win against Emory was an incredible team effort. We used people off the bench who came through for us big time. Our aggressive serving and excellent passing won the game for us. Jane Dean was unstoppable and Stella and Laura were just so steady. This is a great confidence builder for our first years and I'm excited to see what's next."
